Toledo Zoo

The Toledo Zoo was founded in 1900 with the donation of one small woodchuck to the Toledo Park Superintendent, who placed it in a cage in Walbridge Park. During the
zoo's early years, its animal menagerie grew sporadically, relying on individual or circus
donations. Today this 62-acre zoo is a cultural cornerstone of northwest Ohio and
southeast Michigan. Often referred to as "America's Most Complete Zoo" because of
its unique combination of animals, buildings and natural habit styled exhibits, the Toledo
Zoo cares for 4,393 animals, representing 712 species. Between 1994 and 1999, attendance reached more than 800,000 each year, topping one million twice.
The Zoo's state-of-the-art exhibits, together with historical architecture, are fully
blended to provide its animals with the best possible environment and offer visitors an
exciting experience. The zoo is home to the nation's first underwater viewing
Hippoquarium. The newest exhibit, The Arctic Encounter, gives visitors a chance to enjoy
underwater viewing of seals and polar bears. This exhibit is just one of the many new additions the zoo has planned with the goal to double its size by 2005. The Toledo Zoo is open daily from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and is located four miles south of
downtown Toledo. Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for children ages 2-11 and seniors;
children under 2 and members are free. For further information please call 419-385-5721 or visit Toledo Ohio Zoo.
